Mostly letters of John Dowling. Also included are the papers of Dowling's wife Catherine West Dowling, son Fenelon, and brothers Thomas and Robert. Topics include John and Thomas' journalistic and political careers, John's work as aide to Indiana Governor Noah Noble, and John's involvement with the Miami Indian removal and settlements through his Bureau of Indian Affairs position. Other topics include Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, divorce, the nickname "Hoosier," public opinion about slavery and the Civil War, reverse emigration to Ireland, and newspaper publishing in Indiana and elsewhere.

Noah Noble served in many official positions throughout Indiana. He was sheriff and a member of the State Legislature for Franklin County, Indiana. He was also Receiver of public monies for Indianapolis Land District. In 1831, he was elected Governor of the State of Indiana and was re-elected for a second term. Journalist and politician John Dowling was born in Ireland and came to America in 1818. Trained as a printer, he edited newspapers in Bowling Green, Ky. and Terre Haute, Ind. Dowling served in the Indiana House of Representatives, and as a clerk for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
